You’ll usually see swelling, bruising, and soreness at the site, and most cases clear up within a week with cold compresses on day one, warm compresses after that, and rest for the affected arm. How To Recognize Infiltration During Your Donation
Plasma donation keeps a needle in your vein for roughly 60 to 90 minutes while the machine cycles between drawing blood and returning your red cells with saline. The return phase carries particular risk: fluid is pushed back under pressure, and if the needle has shifted even slightly, that fluid goes into the tissue rather than the vein. Elevation And Pain Relief
Keep the arm elevated when you can during the first day to help fluid drain away from the site. Over-the-counter acetaminophen or ibuprofen handles the soreness for most people. When To See A Doctor
Most infiltrations heal within a week on home care alone. See a doctor promptly if any of the following show up:
- Swelling or pain that worsens after 48 hours instead of improving

- Thick or bloody drainage from the puncture wound
- Numbness or tingling that spreads or won’t fade
- Extreme tightness or hardness in the arm with severe pain when you stretch

Not every painful needle experience is infiltration. Nerve injury looks different from infiltration:
- Electric or shooting pain radiating from the site down to the fingers

Speak up the second you feel it during the procedure so the phlebotomist can withdraw the needle. When You Can Donate Again
Most plasma centers will defer you from using the affected arm until it’s fully healed, generally one to two weeks depending on how bad the infiltration was. Medical staff will look at the arm at your next visit, and if visible bruising, hardness, or swelling remains, expect to wait longer.
If your other arm has usable veins, it may be available at your next scheduled donation, assuming you meet all other eligibility criteria. Hydrate Before You Show Up

Rotate Your Veins
Repeated punctures in the same spot create scar tissue that leaves the vein harder, less elastic, and more prone to problems at the next visit. Ask the phlebotomist to alternate between veins or use different areas of the same vein. If you donate twice a week, this matters more than almost any other preventive step.
Tell The Phlebotomist What You Know, And Stay Still
If you’ve had infiltration before, mention it before they start. Note which arm and which vein caused trouble. Staff can pick a different vein, use a smaller gauge needle, or take extra care with anchoring. During the procedure, arm movement is one of the most common reasons the needle shifts.
