The quickest way to find your Medicare PTAN number online is to log into the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS) at pecos.cms.hhs.gov and open your Medicare ID Report, where your active PTANs are listed.1Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Welcome to the Medicare Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System If you don’t have PECOS credentials, the same number appears on your original Medicare enrollment approval letter and can be read back to you by your Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) after identity verification.
Look It Up in PECOS
You’ll need an Identity and Access Management (I&A) account to sign in. If you don’t already have one, you can register for a user account from the PECOS homepage.1Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Welcome to the Medicare Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System

- Select My Associates on the PECOS home page.
- Click View Enrollments next to the individual or organizational enrollment you need.
- Click View Medicare ID Report. Your active PTANs appear in the Medicare ID column.
If you’re tied to more than one group or practice location, expect to see several PTANs. Each row maps to a specific enrollment record, so match the PTAN to the right practice location and MAC jurisdiction before you use it.
If You Don’t Have PECOS Access
Check Your Enrollment Approval Letter
When CMS approves your Medicare enrollment, the CMS Regional Office issues a notification letter that includes your PTAN, your effective date, and your provider agreement where applicable.3Noridian Medicare Part A. Call Your MAC
Your MAC’s provider customer service line will give you your PTAN after verifying your identity. Representatives authenticate callers using the NPI plus at least two additional data elements from your provider record, such as your legal name, remittance address, and practice address on file with Medicare.4Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Which MAC to Call
Before you dial, confirm which MAC handles your jurisdiction. CMS publishes jurisdiction maps and state-by-state lists on its “Who Are the MACs” page, covering the A/B MAC, Home Health and Hospice MAC, and DME MAC assignments.5Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Who Are the MACs Look up your state and you’ll see the contractor name and contact information.
Different MACs handle Part A, Part B, DME, and home health. If you bill under more than one program, you may deal with more than one MAC, and each will have issued a separate PTAN.6Noridian Medicare. Provider Transaction Access Number (PTAN) – JE Part B
PTAN vs. NPI: Make Sure You Have the Right Number
A PTAN is a Medicare-specific number your MAC assigns when your enrollment is approved. It links to your National Provider Identifier (NPI) but does a different job. The NPI is the 10-digit number that goes on every claim you submit; the PTAN authenticates your identity when you interact with your MAC, whether you’re checking claim status, verifying beneficiary eligibility, or updating enrollment information.6Noridian Medicare. The NPI is a HIPAA standard used across the healthcare system.7Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. National Provider Identifier Standard (NPI) You have one NPI, but you can have more than one PTAN. A MAC may issue separate PTANs when your practice locations fall in different charge localities, and you’ll have different PTANs under different MACs if you bill both Part A and Part B.6Noridian Medicare. Keep Your PTAN Confidential
Unlike your NPI, which is publicly searchable, the PTAN is a confidential credential. Limit its use to communications with your MAC, CMS Regional Office, and State or District Offices.8Noridian Medicare. Provider Transaction Access Number (PTAN) – JE Part A Don’t include it in correspondence where it isn’t needed, and store it the way you’d store any other access credential.
If you suspect someone has compromised your PTAN or is submitting fraudulent claims under it, report it to the HHS Office of Inspector General fraud hotline at 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477) or at oig.hhs.gov/fraud/hotline.9U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG).
